Paraphrasing is a pivotal skill to have when it comes to the IELTS exam, and you simply must perfect it if you wish to boost your score to an impressive level. The first step is understanding exactly what paraphrasing is and what it involves.
Paraphrasing is essentially the process of re-writing a passage, sentence, or phrase in such a way that the words are changed but the meaning is not. This is a useful skill to have, particularly in writing tests, but it also has its merits in speaking, reading, and listening exams too.
Being able to take a sentence, dismantle the meaning and rewrite it in your own words is also a fantastic way of ensuring that you understand exactly what is being said.
There are a number of different techniques to implement when it comes to paraphrasing and you should familiarise yourself with each and every one. Depending on the words, phrases, and sentences, some techniques will be more applicable that others, so having a wide range of skills to tap into will serve you well.
Synonyms are basically different words that share the exact same meaning, allowing them to be interchanged within a sentence. This is one of the most widely-used techniques when it comes to paraphrasing, as you simply have to highlight a word in the original text and replace it with a relevant synonym. Another key paraphrasing tool is to change the form of a singular word while adjusting the rest of the sentence accordingly.
The important thing to note with this method is that a minor change in the form of one word may render the sentence grammatically incorrect, so you will have to go back and make changes to avoid this. Verbs with an object can be turned into a passive format, which is a perfectly acceptable technique in academic writing, including the IELTS test. The opposite of a passive sentence is an active sentence.
For example, an active version of a sentence could be: The dog walker trained 26 dogs in her back garden. Chopping and changing passive and active sentences is definitely a good paraphrasing tool.

Jul 31 The examiner looks for a range of vocabulary. If you repeat the same word over and over, it shows that you do not have a range of vocabulary. This may lower your Vocabulary score to a 6, or possibly a 5. Paraphrasing does not mean that you can use a bunch of high-level vocabulary and never repeat yourself. Paraphrasing for a 7 or higher means that you can still use the same word a few times, but you are also able to express this idea in other words.
You can see from the example that, often, the key to paraphrasing is trying to be more specific about your ideas. This means on Speaking Parts 1 and 2, you should use some slang and idioms, as these questions are informal and personal.
On Speaking Part 3, you can show flexibility by using some high level words, but also by using a variety of linking words.Branding quotes quotes
There are simple activities you can start doing today to increase your vocabulary range. The biggest danger here is that you copy the test question in your essay. If you do, these words will not count, and you may not reach the required words for Task 1 or the words for Task 2. Start lists for these common topics in your vocabulary notebook. When you read interesting articles in the newspaper, or hear interesting phrases on TV episodes or in movies, add one or two words at a time.
Be careful, though, of adding too much. Remember, our brains are limited, unfortunately. Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly.

Necessary Necessary. Non-necessary Non-necessary.Hi, I'm Liz. This page contains tips on paraphrasing to maximise your score. Using different words with a similar meaning shows the examiner a range of vocabulary which you need to get over band score 6. Here is an example of how a sentence can be re-written by using synonyms:. The reasons for increasing levels of pollution are the development of industry and air travel.
The causes of rising levels of pollution are the growth and expansion of industry as well as the number of people travelling by air. This means you need to decide which words to paraphrase and which words to keep the same. Decide which words you can successfully paraphrase and which ones you will keep. Be selective. A high level student knows when to change words and when now to change words. The more mistakes you make with vocabulary in IELTS writing and speaking, the lower your score will be.
Paraphrasing and Synonyms in IELTS reading
Paraphrasing is a skill. Synonyms do not have exactly the same meaning and cannot always be used at the same time. Another way to paraphrase sentences is to change the form of the word.
Here is an example:. Many people have poor health because they are failing to eat well and are not exercising enough.
This demonstrates excellent vocabulary skills to the examiner and will help you get a good score for vocabulary. It shows that you understand the words very well and can use them in different ways. If you watch the video below about writing an introduction for IELTS writing task 2, you will see again how words can be paraphrased by changing their form and using synonyms.
Another way to paraphrase successfully is to change the order to words in a sentence. This means changing the structure of the sentence. Taking the example from above again:. Many people fail to eat well and exercise and, for that reason, they are unhealthy. Lets make more changes to the sentence. You are probably aware that paraphrasing is a crucial skill to master in IELTS writing and is important for a Band score of 7 or more, but what about in Speaking?
So clearly this is important to consider when in the speaking exam. What kind of food do you like? The kinds of food I like are spicy such as thai food and I like Indian food too. Are there any foods you dislike?

Yes I dislike bland food such as tofu or white bread, they are too bland. What food did you like to eat as a child? As a child I liked to eat spaghetti and hamburgers, I sometimes ate cakes as a child too.Business plan project paper plan design
Do you prefer to eat alone or with other people? I prefer to eat with other people because I can talk to them while I eat. It seems to be grammatically correct anyway. See the analysis below. The words In blue are copied from the question. Although the answers are clear and grammatically seem to be correct, the vocabulary is limited and too simple. Bland cuisine is not my cup of tea, such as tofu, soba noodles or white bread.
When I was a kid I was mad about spaghetti and hamburgers. I remember how excited I used to get when we went to Wimpy to get a quarter pounder. I also had a sweet tooth, so I was pretty keen on cakes. I would rather have dinner or lunch with someone, like my classmates or friends, as I find it more sociable and we can chat about various things.
IELTS Writing Task 2: introduction paraphrasing
I feel uncomfortable eating on my own. Bland cuisine is not my cup of teasuch as tofu, soba noodles or white bread. When I was a kid I was crazy about spaghetti and hamburgers.
I would rather have dinner or lunch with someonelike my classmates or friendsas I find it more sociable and we can chat about various things. Do I have to paraphrase in all parts of the speaking test?IELTS Speaking test (Band 8.5 - 9.0) - Sample 1
Yes, in speaking part 2 and part 3 it is the same. Sometimes you have no choice but to answer the question directly and be very specific, not all answers have to be long. For example, when I lived in London my yearly income was at least pounds more than when I was living in Hereford.Paraphrasing is also a crucial skill for the writing section as you need to change the wording of the task question. It is also very useful in speaking and it shows up in the reading and listening sections.
Paraphrasing is when the wording changes but the same meaning is retained. It can be done with synonyms, changing the grammatical structure and the use of set phrases. In the reading section, the words in the question will be reflected in the text but they will not have the same wording. They will be paraphrased usually with synonyms.
Bear in mind also that a whole sentence can have a completely different wording but keep the same meaning. You can buy this book on amazon. Cinnamon is a sweet, fragrant spice made from the inner bark of trees of the genus Cinnamomum, which originates from the Indian subcontinent.
It was known in biblical times and is stated in a number of books in the Bible, both as an ingredient that was added to oils for anointing peoples bodies and also as a token which was a sign of friendship among lovers and friends. In ancient Rome, mourners participating in funerals burnt cinnamon to create a sweet smell. Most often, however, the spice found its main use as an additive to food and drink. At a banquet, a host would offer guests a plate with various spies piled upon it as an indication of how wealthy an individual is.
Cinnamon was also said to be beneficial to well being and was believed to heal different illnesses, such as indigestion. Here is how I have reformulated the above paragraph using these synonyms and paraphrasing. Toward the end of the Middle Ages, the European middle classes began to desire the way of living similar to that of the elite, including their consumption of spices.
This resulted in an increased need for cinnamon and other spices. At that time, cinnamon was transported by Arab merchants, who kept the source of the spice under wraps from potential competitors. They took it from India, where it was grown, on camels through an overland route to the Mediterranean. Their journey ended when they arrived at Alexandria.
European traders sailed there to buy their stock of cinnamon, then brought it back to Venice. The spice then travelled from that great trading city to markets all around Europe. Because the overland trade route allowed for only small amounts of the spice to reach Europe, and because Venice had a virtual cartel on the trade, the Venetians could set an excessively high cost.
These prices, together with the increasing demand, prompted a search for new routes to Asia by Europeans keen to get involved in the spice trade. Reformulating the text as I have done in my examples is a good way to practice paraphrasing.
